Cruel and Unusual

Infotainment shows that pass for local news usually make me cringe.  But the local ABC affiliate has apparently found a way to return to relevancy – crime prevention.

A tough new punishment for Georgia motorists who run from the law - the WSB-TV 5 o'clock news

Being forced to watch your average local newscast for hours on end could crack a hardened criminal.  But as tough as this innovative adult detention program will be on motorists who try to escape the cops, it’s got to be tougher on handsome Jovita and Justin; no matter how good their behavior, they’re on lockdown until their contracts expire.

Seriously though, I know there are professional journalists left in the electronic media business – a few of my colleagues from years ago are still hanging on.  But I have to say it’s embarassing to watch what passes for TV news in most US markets, and the effect that today’s compelling pseudo news, “breaking news” if you will, has had on our collective intelligence is beyond the pale.
